DUBAI (Reuters) – Iran has actually cautioned the United States versus any new effort to take an Iranian oil tanker in ocean blues after it left Gibraltar, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on state tv on Monday.

The Iranian tanker captured in a standoff in between Tehran and the West was sailing to Greece on Monday after leaving Gibraltar, shipping data revealed, hours after the British territory rejected a U.S. request to apprehend the vessel further.

Asked whether the United States might restore its seizure demand after the tanker cruised from Gibraltar, Foreign Ministry representative Abbas Mousavi stated: “Such an action … would endanger shipping safety in ocean blues. We have issued a warning through official channels, particularly the Swiss embassy.”

Switzerland represents U.S. interests in Iran which has no diplomatic relations with the United States.
